Presidential election 2014:Will Afghans move forward?

Presidential election 2014:Will Afghans move forward?

The above projection has been taken from Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai's own website and it consists of 26% vote caste yet Gul Agha Sherzai, a presidential candidate and former governor of Nangahar province called this an illegal act by Ghani's supporters. Although it is hard to ignore ethnic divide yet campaigning and selection of vice presidents shows a visible change of priorities in Afghan political arena. Emphasis on Aghan identity shows by both wining candidates Ghani & Abdullah has a message and pressure. According to Washington post "The presidential candidates had tried to market themselves as post-ethnic leaders, promoting economic and political reform rather than the kind of sectarianism that fed the civil war in the 1990s. An electoral result that breaks down along ethnic lines could complicate the formation of the next government, requiring negotiations and compromises to create a broad-based coalition." With fears and hopes the analyst of WP further wrote "Eighteen years after it ended, tensions among those groups have diminished. Saturday’s election was celebrated in many quarters as a moment of national unity and collective opposition to the Taliban. But Kabul is still divided into neighborhoods reflecting the country’s largest ethnic groups."
This is not new and if we read Amir Abdur Rehman biography he too pinpointed powerful existence of non pukhtoon Afghans in diverse borders. From removal of sardar dawood till today Afghan society gradually drifted towards ethnicities which were visible even in Parcham and Khalaq groups.
In this world of Nation States many ethnic groups or nationalities are living in more than one nation states. So is in Afghan society too. Tajiks, Uzbiks, Kafirs and Pukhtoons are all divided yet under the Afghan identity they can address their issues. Yet there are extremists too but this election will lead them to resolve their internal issues.
