Still after 80 years, France, UK, Denmark etc have overseas lands and even the current agreement  of UK extended the lease with US of Chagos Islands is a contradiction with UN sovereignty laws. In the last day of British annexation of India British government had canceled a lease with State of J&K of Gilgit Baltistan and handed over at 13th August 1947, after 20 years yet lease time was 50 years.

One of America’s most important – and secretive – overseas assets, Diego Garcia has helped launch two invasions of Iraq, served as a vital landing spot for bombers that fly missions across Asia, and has been linked to US rendition efforts.

Its name Dina Arobi(land of Swans)دینۃ عروبی has been associated with Arab sailors who first discovered the island.... than entered protégées in early 16th century...In 1507, Portuguese sailors came to the uninhabited island and established a visiting base. Diogo Fernandes Pereira, a Portuguese navigator, was the first European known to land in Mauritius. He named the island "Ilha do Cisne" ("Island of the Swan"). till end of 16th century Dutch replaced them...In 1598, a Dutch squadron under Admiral Wybrand Van Warwyck landed at Grand Port and named the island "Mauritius" after Prince Maurice of Nassau (Dutch: Maurits van Nassau) of the Dutch Republic. than came French.....France, which already controlled neighbouring Île Bourbon (now Réunion), took control of Mauritius in 1715 and renamed it Isle de France. French general Mahé de La Bourdonnais established Port Louis as a naval base and a shipbuilding centre in Maurits...,. Then the Islands were annexed by British colonizers in 1820....In 1965, due to Yalta agreement, they leased the annexed Islands to US and US developed a strategic base there for 99 yeas. The lease will end in 2065 but now Mauritius can cancel it too. But question remains important regarding overseas annexations by various European and other countries and it is raised by Russians too.


Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also weighed in on the dispute at a press conference on Tuesday, condemning major powers, including the UK, for still holding several territories – including the Chagos Islands – in violation of UN resolutions.
