August Lessons: Roots of religious extremism & role of Jinnah and Gandhi

August Lessons
Roots of religious extremism &
the role of Jinnah and Gandhi

A fight between orthodoxy and enlightenment, liberalism and extremism plays an important role in last 115 years in subcontinent. Orthodox and extremists use religion, nationalism and anti-colonialist struggle in spreading their misleading and prejudiced interpretations smartly.

Dilip Hero deconstructs Mahatma Gandhi’s original Sin smartly in his book Longest August and it is a story of rise of religious fundamentalism in pre-partitioned India. In newly formed countries India and Pakistan religious fundamentalists got ample spaces in nation building processes not only due to Pak India rivalries but also became part and parcel of state craft due to planned cold war between former USSR and USA. How colonial masters engaged Ali brothers and handed over to Mahatma is also pinpointed by Dilip smartly. Both Bharat and Pakistan were formed by an act of parliament and negotiations yet fundamentalists in both countries reinterpret history with their own facts. Just read what Dilip said and try to unlearn what you studied in textbooks and through the books of court historians.
