and Engineering and Director of the Center
for Advanced Computing Systems at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), which he joined in
2002. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science and M.S. in Computer Engineering
from Syracuse University, New York, U.S.A., in 1992 and 1987, respectively; and
his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Engineering and
Technology, Lahore, Pakistan, in 1985. His early education was from Central
Model High School and Government College at Lahore. Before joining UTA, he was
an associate professor in the Computer Science Department at the Hong Kong
University of Science and Technology. He has authored 270-plus publications,
including books, papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings on
supercomputing systems, parallel optimization algorithms, digital video
compression and analysis, assistive technologies, and sustainable computing. Dr.
Ahmad has received numerous international research awards, including the five
best research paper awards at leading conferences and top-tier journals. Dr.
Ahmad’s research, drawing career-wide funding of about $15 million, is
sponsored by government agencies and several companies. According to Google
Scholar, his research papers are widely cited in computer science referencing his
research work. Google Scholar ranks him among the top ten researchers in
several sub-branches of computer science and engineering. According to Stanford
University’s rating, he is among the top 2% of scientists in the world. Aside
from being the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal, Sustainable
Computing: Informatics and Systems, he has served as an editor of six other
journals, chaired over 20 conferences, and delivered more than 150 talks,
including several keynote speeches. Currently, he is Editor-in-Chief of Springer’s
Discover Internet-of-Things, a journal with an editorial board of
researchers worldwide. In the past, he has been a senior visiting scientist at
the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China, and a visiting lecturer at
NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas. A regular senior visiting
scientist at the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, New York,
he also holds honorary professorships at several universities around the world.
Dr. Ahmad is a certified evaluator of ABET
(Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) for evaluating computer
science and engineering degree programs worldwide. He is honored as a Distinguished
Life Fellow of IDES (India’s Institute of Doctors, Engineers, & Scientists). Dr. Ahmad is also a Fellow
of the IEEE (Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers)—the Fellow grade is the highest of
the IEEE and is conferred for
