Lhore: Mysteries and stories galore

Mysteries and stories galore

In plentiful books, chronicles and testimonies of Pre-colonial times, spelling of the name of city was written as Lhore instead of modern day prevalent Lahore. We the inhabitants of the city too call it Lhore that is a perfect Punjabi connotation of the name. But it was amended during colonial period.  The policy of ‘change names’ was among the ugliest labors of colonialism.

Many of us don't know that at 14-August 1947, Lhore was the biggest city of Pakistan as par census records.

Muhammad Naeem Murtaza’s book raises the curtains on many an unheard-of incident in the history of Lahore

Whenever you read a book on Lahore — or Lhore, as the city’s name is spelt in many chronicles and testimonies — it only makes you more inquisitive about the place. As per Imperial Gazetteer of India (Vol 16, p106), the Greco-Egyptian writer Claudius Ptolemy (100AD–170AD) discussed Lhore in his famous book, ‘Geography,’ while travelling back via river Chandar Bhag (presently Chenab) towards Ravi. Being a seat of learning, power and modernity through ages, the city still haunts the researchers. Archeologists have even discovered settlements of pre-Harappan times (4,000-5,000 BC) along the Ravi’s bank. Muhammad Naeem Murtaza’s latest book, titled ‘Waqayat e Lahore,’ compiles 590-odd incidents, from Qutbuddin Aibak (1150-1210) to present times, and covers almost 866 years of the city’s history.
In the next edition, perhaps, Murtaza can add what Ptolemy, 7th-century Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsiang, 9th-century Moroccan geographer Muhammad al-idrisi and Turk writer of Hudūd al-Ālam min al-Mashriq ilá l-Maghrib said about the city.
The book Hudid al Alam....was translated by a Russian orientalist Vladimir Fedorovich Minorsky as The Boundaries of The World from The East to the West in 1927.

Murtaza compiled this book to pay tribute to his beloved city. Sadly, in many entries, the references are weak and in some cases they call for more research. (In the preface, Murtaza humbly accepts his shortcomings.) But overall, ‘Waqayat e Lahore’ introduces many new, unheard-of incidents related to Lhore.
Big ships in Ravi
The book talks of a time when big ships were famously seen in our rivers but thanks to the over-estimated canal system, barrages and fixed bridges, this trade was destroyed. The author reproduces an incident regarding Mughal King Akbar’s campaign in the 1590s of the famous Lahori Bandar (Dahro) near Thatta (presently in Sindh). The name of a Lhori port is mentioned in numerous books and chronicles by the Portuguese and Persians; in later years, it too was changed.
As the story goes, a special ship, called “Akbari,” was prepared with 3,000 wooden plates. It could bear 15,000 mounds of weight. If you read Turkish admiral Siddi Ali Raise’s ‘Travels of an Admiral’ (1538), Scottish traveller Alexander Burnes’s ‘Travels in Bukhara,’ and many others, you shall understand the story of the river channel trade pretty well.

Our River trade was destroyed after  annexation of the Punjab 1849.  Author reproduces an incident in this entry regarding Mughal King Akbar’s campaign of 1590s of famous Lhori Bandar (Dahro) near Thatta (presently in Sindh). The name of Lhori port is mentioned by Portuguese, Persians in numerous books and chronicles’ yet in later years it was also changed.
700 traitors hanged in Lhore
Khusro, the son of Mughal King Jehangir, fought against his father. He was arrested and his 700 companions were hanged. From Nulakha Garden (near the Railway Station) uptill the Lahore Fort, the traitors were hanged, as the King stared down at the hangings from Shah Burj. The fifth guru of Sikhs, Guru Arjun, also supported Khusro, and was killed. In colonial literature, the incident of killing of the sacred Guru was used smartly to aggravate the Sikh-Muslim conflict in the Punjab. Interestingly, propagandists forgot the killing of Khusro and his Muslim companions because that could deconstruct their misleading narrative. In Lahore, we still have a Mohallah Guru Arjun Nagar near Gwalmandi.
Abdali — Hero or tribal head
Sabir Shah was a majzob of Mashhad (Iran). Abdali went to him and Shah predicted his Kingship. The prophecy came true and Abdali accorded him a royal status in return. Later, Sabir came to Lhore but he was killed under suspicion of being an agent of Abdali.
In January 1748, Abdali attacked Lahore and destroyed Begumpura. He wanted to loot other areas also but a group of Lahoris gave him enough money and he postponed his ‘jihad.’
In early 1760s, Abdali conducted another raid in Lhore and, after his return, appointed Kaboli Mal, a Punjabi Hindu based in Mochi Gate, as his representative. Such incidents are enough to deconstruct official narrative based on religious nationalism.
Coin of Moraan, the dancer
Moraan was a learned dancer. Maharaja Ranjeet Singh married her in 1802. The Lhore Darbar released a coin in her name. It was called “Moraan Shahi.”
Moraan was a Muslim girl but the Maharaja did not force her to change her religion. She built a mosque near Shahalmi Gate. She is buried in the Miani Sahab graveyard.
Anarkali tomb converted into Church
When the British annexed Lhore Darbar in 1849, they knew very well that it was thickly populated by Muslims. But an incident happened in 1851 that disturbed the new rulers. The English rulers converted the tomb of Anarkali (presently in the Punjab Civil Secretariat complex) into Saint James Church. The move was strongly resisted by the Lahoris but court historians excluded it from the official narrative.

Punjabi, Kashmiri and Pukhtoon Muslims and Non-Muslims fought against colonizers during three wars (1846-9) but court historians excluded such incidents
Ban on Liquor; January 1947
The British Raj was still intact. Sir Evan Meredith Jenkins was the Governor while Khizar Hayyat Tiwana was the Premier of Punjab. Deputy Excise and Taxation officer Lahore issued an order to all restaurants which said that no one should give liquor to students.
Obscenity, Prostitutes and Music
There are many entries in the book that address the mind-set that eventually steered Pakistan towards extremism in so many ways. In January 1950, a case was registered against great Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto regarding obscenity. On October 9, 1953, trade tax was imposed in Shahi Mohallah. But on March 12, 1956, Lahore Corporation discussed an idea to abolish Shahi Muhallah. The idea was rejected it under the fear that if they ban Shahi mohallah activities it would spread in the whole city.  But in the age of enlightened Ayub Khan under the policy of misuse of religion Kalabagh annexed the Shahi Mohallah including Tabbi Galli at 18 September 1964 and the fear of Lhore Corporation proved right. The reast is history and we have to live in that situation. Lesson; when you discuss things in assemblies you get chance to discuss out of box solutions in numerous forms but in dictatorships you have to depend on one dimensional  approach.
. But in General Ayub’s period, the registration of Shahi Mohallah residents began in November 1958. It is said that there were 218 prostitutes and 400 dancers among the residents. The purpose of data collection was to destroy them. In October 1963, the district government restricted the movement of prostitutes and transgenders. Finally, on September 18, 1964, Governor West Pakistan Nawab Kalabagh ordered the police to vacate Tibbi Galli in an hour and half. The residents of Tibbi Galli recorded their protest in front of Punjab Assembly on January 7, 1965.
In an interesting development, in March 1963, a Lahori Parsi member Begum Nargis Jan moved a motion in Lahore Corporation to adopt Punjabi as medium of instruction in schools but the members not only rejected it but also imposed a ban on dances in hotels.

One more:  In February 1949 the name of magazine of Halley College was changed from Ganga to Al-Iqtisad
Such incidents are enough to understand the mind-set we prepared by themselves before the entry of Zia and Saudi Islam.
The book records many more interesting incidents of Lhore. For instance, the setting up of the first hospital for mental patients in Ranjit Singh’s time (1836), the construction of modern water supply system (1873), the foundation of Muslim Press Association (1911), the formation of an association of tailor masters (1924), the mourning meeting in memory of Mahatma Gandhi organised at Islamia College, which was presided over by CM Punjab (January 1948), the removal of the statues of Lawrence (1950) and Queen Victoria (1951), conflict on the date of Eid (1953), death of the last princess of the Punjab, Lady Bamba Jindaan (1957), petition against Basant (1959), the foundation of first TV station of Pakistan in Lahore (1964), the founding meeting of PPP (1967), change of name from Tilak Nagar to Data Nagar (1970), displacement of Pre-Christ ancient magnetic pillar from Jain Mandir to Lahore Museum (1975), beginning of Samjohta Express (July 1976), the death of the first wife of Liaqat Ali Khan (1983), the historic reception of Benazir Bhutto (April, 1986), the death of ex-president of Kashmir K H Khurshid (1988) in public transport, the arrival of the first Indian PM at Minar-e-Pakistan (Feb 1999), the visit of Dina Jinnah (2004), the Lahore-Amritsar Bus service (Dec 2005), the fiery protest against sketches (February 2006), the ban on Basant by Supreme Court (March 2006), the reopening of Pak Tea House (March 2013), and the opening of the Chinese Consulate (2015).
You will also find entries like foundation of Punjab National Bank (1894), formation of Muslim Women organization (1908), election campaign of Allama Iqbal (Dec 1926), last ceremony of late Ganga Ram (1927), death of elephant Benazier (1958), murder of Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj (1970), return of war prisoners from India (Sept 1973), establishment of Lahore dry port (1974), death of K H khurshid(1988) in public transport, ex-president of Kashmir who had resigned before operation Jabraltor , death of Indra Gandhi’s cousin Jank Kumari Asghar (1997), refusal of official khatib of governor house from offering last pray of governor Suleman Taseer (4 Jan 2011), Infamous Raymond Divide case (27 Jan 2011), Metro Buss started (Feb 2013) and many more in it.

Yet Murtaza seems to have missed much more. But what he compiled is a gift to all who love Lahore.

Punjabi Protest: A column in Hum-Sub and Selective Analysis

Punjabi Protest: A column in Hum-Sub and Selective Analysis

Although the heading itself is enough to understand the mindset yet it is good to read it and then read the comments.  On the one hand private media did not cover the event (their cameras were their and they recorded it too) and on the other hand some intellectuals are twisting it. All are ready to serve elite school system. We all knew well about the false pride of English and that false pride runs in supporters of Urdu/Hindi too. Read and think about it.

Before targeting Arabic cultural influence if the writer wrote some lines regarding colonial twists then he may able to show complete picture. But under selective approach and more often to defend secularism & modernity we usually missed colonial twists, false prides etc. During so-called secular colonial set up Urdu was imposed in our lands in 1865 and if we read textbooks of colonial times we can understand their policy of developing this region as garrison state. Punjabi sufi poets remained out of lessons and the same policy was continued after creation of Pakistan yet they changed it with green wrapping. Protest against Beacon House is a symbol against misleading pride. More important thing is boycott of so-called private media that exposed its false claims. Humsub should consider it too.

Punjabi Protest against Elite School Misconduct : What next?

Punjabi Protest Against

Elite School Misconduct : What next?

Yesterday at 20th October 2016 Punjabis registered their protest against misleading notification and below the belt clarifications of an Elite School Beacon House in which numerous participants including university professors, teachers, journalists, NGO activists, intellectuals, Publishers, editors and lovers of the biggest and oldest Pakistani language (Punjabi) participated. They registered their anger in front of Beacon House Headquarter @ Guru Mangat Road, Gulberg Lhore and stayed for two to three hours there. School representatives came for negotiations that failed due to their bad justification.  Interestingly Pakistani private media ignored it as elite education business is a  wealthy client. The practice is common in elite schools where one often listen voices against Pakistani mother tongues especially the Punjabi.
The Story of a misleading narrative based on colonial pride and prejudice. Curses or abuses in Punjabi are not allowed means Student are allowed to use abusive language either in English and Urdu...Is this so-called enlightened education we are giving to our children? Elite English medium schools better revisit it.
One cannot think of such behavior especially from an education institution yet since colonial times we often confront with that misleading pride either on the name of English or Urdu/Hindi.  With such prejudices what they are serving in education is easily understandable.

A petition is in the court of law and an MPA Hinna Butt also raise it in Punjab assembly so it is not possible to ignore it any further for elite schools. It is time to rethink.

It shows how we often look to our own languages. The protest is against this behavior and that is why intellectuals, professors etc participated in it. Elite schools should think about it. Respect their own culture, respect their own land is important thing and they can include lessons regarding Punjabi sufi poets in their curriculum. it is time for government and private actors in education to revisit it for once.

In the last few days a notice of the Beaconhouse School System Sahiwal campus from August 2016 has been doing the rounds on social media. The usual mundane school notice on discipline has excited comment because in the section on ‘Foul language’ it has interestingly included ‘Punjabi,’—yes, the Punjabi language, the language spoken by almost 50 per cent of Pakistan’s population as a first language. When the school clarified in a bizarrely strong, arrogant and derisive statement, it conveniently added the word ‘curses’ after the word ‘Punjabi’ in order to make it all go away.

Politics of Leaks: Hidden Powers, Palace intrigues & Info-Leaks

Politics of Leaks

Hidden Powers, Palace intrigues & Info-Leaks

Is print media subservient to digital media? Recent Email leaks of Hillary Clinton and its misuse in election campaign 2016 is enough to understand who is who behind the game. Keeping in view post 2007 world of information technology the larger trend is to ''leave editor behind'' and relay on ''Leaks''. Is it a new method of control? You can trust on Leaks only in editor less media and we are living in the age of social media. It is part of problem in many ways and we have to think about it. Powerful agencies are using info-leaks smartly against selective opponents. Politicians are using it against their competitors. 20th century is known for the misuse of radio, TV by the various nation states and now in 21st century digital is the new mantara. Print is following info-leaks. It is an international trend and we are following it in Pakistan too, as usual, without understanding its impacts. Once it will establish as authentic then it may unfold many new trends. If in future we witness any info-leak regarding deep state we will not able to confront.
Recent story of Cyril was also a leak but when it hit the target, the questions of authenticity and leak raised from various corners. In the same newspaper, a news item regarding army info-leaks was published in April this year. The news was regarding removal of army officers due to corruption. No one raised the question of secrecy, no one asked about breach of national security at that time and interestingly no one had denied it too.
'' In an unprecedented move, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif dismissed six army officers, including two generals, from service over alleged corruption, an authoritative source confirmed on Thursday.''
''A lieutenant general, major general and three brigadiers are said to be among those dismissed from service, said an intelligence official speaking to Dawn News on condition of anonymity.''

Although the story has a story inside related to corruption and misuse of powerful office presumably exposed due to an alleged accident that killed two officers but it was used as an example to follow by civilians. No one asked who leaked it. If that leak was justified then how could we object Cyril?  But in power politics timing always plays an important role so the incident exposed inside power tussle.
How info-leaks are getting important place in Pakistan is an interesting study and in many ways it is an unguided missile and it can hit anywhere.

Story of Pakistani Left by the left worker and for the left workers....

Story of Pakistani Left

by the left worker

and for the left workers....

The biggest reason for these splits was egos. Every person who was big leader within the left thought, "I am here and there should just be my group." Naseer

An interview of Naseer Humayun (Nasera) that helps in understanding history of the left in Pakistan from 1966-86. It has many gapes but you may understand positions of various left actors. Is it only question of larger than ideology Egos that lead to factionalism within left or there were more important and larger issues? especially related to centralized structure that often restricted freedom of thought within left circles.  In the below links you can watch speeches of AWP leaders delivered today 16 October 2016 at Karachi. At AWP official page speech of newly elected President is incomplete yet every one felt need to revisit past. Praising past splits is not a visionary thing but one needs out of box solutions. There are massive misconceptions regarding post 1966 politics. Left generally splinted in various sections and emergence of PPP also attracted many of them. How left deal with new left liberal PPP is still need analysis. What left gain or loss by making love affair with nationalists is also a big question. There are many questions and naseer mentioned few.  You may find some errors regarding dates but it also push us to expand the discussion and collect various point of views. It is also important to separate facts from interpretations so that one can develop a consensus regarding facts.  Finally i got other clips and they are now part of this post. It is a good gesture to leave the president post and implement the constitution but in many ways old grouping is intact at some extent. As Fanoos said there are 16 different groups merged in AWP but in the absence of a meaningful debate it is impossible to come at one page. The magazine Awami Jumhoriate can play vital role but for this an independent editorial team is essential. The party has to understand the fact that still numerous groups and left workers are out of there circle and if they are still reluctant then the party should adopt CBMs. Social media presence of the party is not as effective but scattered in many ways.
As par reporting in Dawn, there are many debatable issues in the speech of Abid Manto. Manto said that Pakistan was created on the name of religion then he has to explain why CPI supported it? there were many senior comrades in 1943 party congress. Even interviews and statements of people after 1947 are much different from what Manto sahib concluded. Khwaja Masood, C R aslam, Major Ishaq, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, safdar Mir penned many writings in this regard.  Regarding armed struggle he said '' groups involved in armed struggle had to eventually sit and negotiate on political grounds. `In most cases, political struggle took over armed struggle. It was borne out of a realisation that even if a group gains independence in a backward country, how will it run its affairs without indulgingin politics?'' But it needs further clarification. In his speech KPK President of AWP supported Afghan revolution but it was also among those examples that ruined the society itself. How Tarakai was killed? then a chain of killings , we all knew what happened in Afghanistan. We still have no rational analysis of Sour revolution. It is high time that the party should develop a narrative without indulging in Sino-Russian conflict. On the one hand we are ready to challenge armed struggle but we are still reluctant to criticize revolutions completed or sustained due to Soviet Armies. AWP current leader, Fanos Gujjar is among those who always prefer class politics to nationalism but it is time to revisit unilateral support of nationalists from 1957. It was largely missing yet in his preface of latest book manto criticized Khans too. The case of Punjab is very weak rather misleading in the narrative of AWP and it is more close to ANP in many ways. In his speech at Karachi,Manto said ''One of the biggest challenges in the future would be to weed out feudalism as it is the core of most issues the country faces.'' In which areas we have feudalism in Pakistan? Is AWP is not supporting feudalism in KPK or South Punjab in many ways?
Interestingly no one speak against MQM and its 40 years role in destruction of the city.
The last not the least is attention to the notion ''we are the only left force'' we knew very well that numerous left people /groups are working as their own and it is time to attract them and for this we need out of box solutions.

Extracts of Naseer Interview

After the creation of Bangladesh, NAP Bahashani split into two groups. One group led by Mirza Ibrahim and Sardar Shaukhat, founded the Workers Party, while the other led by C. R Aslam and Abid Hassan Minto formed the Socialist Party in 1971. At that time Mirza Ibrahim and Sardar Shaukhat wanted to contest the elections and make a possible alliance with the Pakistan Peoples Party. During that period Sardar Shaukhat, who in 1971 was a runner up in Kasur in a contest for a Punjab Assembly seat, emerged as a strong voice in the left.

C. R. Aslam opposed any sort of reconciliation or participation in the elections. What occurred was a split due to poor policy planning and analysis. When the PPP came to power C. R. would eventually be in favor of the PPP due to their labor policies. This poor planning also meant Mubashir Hasan would convincingly defeat Mirza Ibrahim in the 1970 election.

Major Ishaque Muhammed decided after the 1965 split to create his own party and by 1967 he announced his decision. In 1971, two groups emerged from within Mazdoor Kissan party. One was led by Major Ishaque and Afzal Bangash and the other by Sher Ali Bacha and Imtiaz Alam. This decision was related to whether or not to support the PPP. Imtiaz Alam and Bacha were against that

The Socialist Party also had split in 1986 due to its inability to find a coherent policy regarding the movement itself. They had tendered an application to join the movement. But C. R. Aslam wrote a controversial column in the left-organ Awami Jhamooriat, calling the MRD movement 'Zia's B-team'. .....So in 1986 the Socialist Party split and Abid Hassan Minto went on to create the Awami Jhamoori Party.

if the NAP Bhashani group, which included Mirza Ibrahim, C. R. Aslam, Abid Hassan Minto Sardar Shaukhat and others, had stayed together there would still have been the potential to create a vast left alliance. Even among themselves they were unable to work together.
