Historians & intellectuals not only in South Asia but also in the Western world often found in the state of denial about demise & occupation of Lhore Darbar , a kingship that ruled Lhore, Peshur, Multan, Kashmir, Jammu, Bajore, D I Khan, Gilgit Baltistan, Amritsar, Kangra, Jalandhar, D G Khan etc for 50 years.
Just to made it controversial, court historians often portrays it as a Sikh Empire, Anti Muslim, Anti Pathan balla balla but reality is much different from it.
Founder of the Lhore Darbar was Ranjit Singh, the Maha Raja who was born in Gujranwala, in 1780. Until his death (1839) colonial power could not annexed areas like Sindh, Baluchistan, Peshawar, Kashmir, Kabul & Punjab yet after his death within 10 years, all those areas were occupied by the colonial masters. During his times, colonial power had organized a massive communal cum nationality base negative campaign, colonial masters used Sikh Muslim conflict, Muslim non muslim conflict, Pathan Punjabi conflict and also allowed a Jihad against the Maharaja in 1826. from 1832, East India Company launched a reorganization campaign just to stand tricky Royal Bengal Army against Lhore Darbar. In this campaign they recruited non Muslim majority people from the State of Oudh and played anti Muslim card. Ranjit was a king but he took many steps that were important regarding transformation of a Kingship into a Nation State. Formation of salaried regular army was among those various steps. EIC asked him to give safe passage and logistic support so colonial army could occupy areas till Oxus but he had refused three times. Interestingly Afghan King Dost Muhammad Khan did same and had rejected Tsar offer in same way. Both Kings knew well that by giving safe passage and logistic support to foreigners means loss of sovereignty in general. So both Kings acted like a Nation State. Dost Muhammad Khan knew Persian, Pashto, Punjabi, Turkish and Kashmiri. It is also important to remember that brother of Dost M khan remained with Ranjit and served Lhore Darbar for decades and his name was Sultan Muhammad Khan Talai. Later Afghan kings namely Amanullah Khan, Zahir Shah and even President Daud were from his family. Many Pathan tribal heads were with Ranjit but court historians often missed them tactically. It is time to revise our misconceptions. now listen the program
