Fixing The Punjab: a useless effort

Fixing The Punjab: a useless effort

20th century witnessed many useless efforts to fix the Punjab instead of Understanding the Punjab. in politics All India National Congress of pre-partition Punjab was prime example. Due to its anti Punjab policies AINC was defeated first in 1937 elections by the Unionists (A secular party formed by Mian Sir Fazl e Hussain and supported by Chutto Ram, Sikandar Hyat, Feroz Khan Noon etc from late 1920s till early 1940s) and then again defeated by All India Muslim League ( AIML gained mushroom growth after Sikandar-Jinnah Pact in the Punjab) in 1946 elections. it was Mian Iftiqar hussain Mamdot of the Punjab who formed first secular opposition party with Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy of Bengal i-e Jinnah Awami Muslim League and contested first post partition elections in the Punjab in 1951. in-spite of excessive rigging  the party won 32 seats. it was the Punjab who unanimously voted for PPP of Z.A.Bhutto. Before 1971 our establishment was busy in fixing Bengali majority while after 1971 it has same fears from Punjabi majority. Reshuffling of Chief Ministers and 2nd amendment in the constitution of Pakistan were among few examples to fix the Punjab during democratically elected Bhutto's era. In 1981, military dictator organized a census and included Seriaki as another language Only in the Punjab  which was beginning of a new bone of contention in the Punjab. if they had any interest in Pakistani mother tongues then they should establish a national language commission but they only had interest to play with religion & language as usual. Seraiki nationalists have claim of their presence in all 4 provinces yet Zia was interested Only in Punjab. In order to destroy the potent political force , PPP, Zia supported Nationalists in KPK interior sindh & Baluchistan, created MQM in urban Sindh and Muslim league in Punjab yet his plans failed when Mohtarma Benazier Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharief Signed Charter of Democracy in 2006. in 2008 elections , Punjabis did not voted for cronies of military dictatorship. this time their choice was either PML nawaz or PPP. after 18th amendment, provinces first time in Pakistan got chance to show their abilities yet establishment with the help of PPP started the debate of new provinces. Anti people mindset is a colonial legacy and it is a pass time hobby of Non-elected elite in Pakistan. the column attached was written in Feb 2012, yet it is still relevant. please read it. Anti Punjab swing is on the top agenda these days but like AINC it will ruined PPP itself.
