Using religion in Power Politics & its Impact ( Sikh Muslim controversy before 1937 elections)

Using religion in Power Politics before elections: a case from Punjabi politics
AHRAR....SHAHEEDGANJ  &  1936 ELECTIONS

Shahhed Gang incident needs fresh inquiry. Unionists played the religion card and used Sikh Muslim controversy. Right from Anti Dogra movement  of 1931, wining of all three provincial bye election from 1932 to 1935 and victory of KL Gaba, Ahrar was  ready to challenge power circles. Its nearness with Sikh leadership created some fear as recorded in Firoz Khan Noon book.  Shaheed Ganj issue had raised in politics during Gudawar movement. But in 1922 Gurdwara Committee and Malik Lal Khan ( i think its Lal din Qaiser, famous punjabi poet and later founder of  56%  movement of punjabi muslims) did an agreement. In July first 1922 in Zamiandar newspaper Zafar Ali khan had mentioned and praised that agreement in editorial. but later events proved that its main beneficiaries were Unionists. Interestingly when a mob destroyed Mosque inside Gurdwara the whole place was under custody of DC. Master Tara Singh,Mangal Singh (he was a congress man) and Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafar, Sec SGPC  were leading Sikh community interests in negociations. It created a rift between Sikhs & Muslims. Interestingly, Sikandar hayat and Pakistan government still maintain status co, it is neither gurdwara nor mosque but in 1936 it was a double edge weapon used against Ahrar in usual power politics.
