Interview Hussein Naqi Some twists Some truth Some omissions

Interview Hussein Naqi
Some twists
Some truth
Some omissions
Ali abbas did a gud interview but he also misses many points. Regarding many incidents including so-called untimely campaign against Sharief commission on Education interviewer failed to deconstruct Myth of resistance. Nqai sahib’s claim regarding death of Sharief commission is also against facts. The historic education commission was banned by General Yayha Khan Government in 1969. That movement was against Three year degree course but in reality from the point of view of education three year degree course was a good move. Like Naqi sahib, many rightists and leftists opposed it but in fact that demand was made first time by Bengalis in 1928 during an education conference. It was a just demand. Sharief Commission introduced B A honors. Before the three year degrees at graduation level, Pakistani universities were not considered equaling in abroad.  Our master degrees were equal to graduation degrees at abroad esp in Europe and US. Now a day, after 40 years we have revived that system again in our universities. But neither naqi sahib nor interviewer is ready to acknowledge it.
Regarding early days in Karachi, Naqi sahib talked about student movement of 1950s but still after 60 years he failed to analyse it. He said that there was a desire to open new universities, schools etc but it is against facts. At that time Sindh government had schools in Karachi and other cities but in those schools Sindhi language was essential language and Urdu speaking newcomers did not want to learn Sindhi. So they started opening private schools & colleges. So after 1953 movement, private school & colleges got subsidies from government. It was not pro people movement. In this interview neither interviewer nor naqi sahib care about historical order of events. So there are many confusing things in it too.
In 1956 constitution Pakistan was declared Islamic republic but in 1962 constitution it was declared only Republic. Before the first session of 1962 assembly, there was a deadlock and some forces pressurized Ayub to include word “Islamic republic” in constitution. Those who pressurized Ayub include many Bengali members too. G W chaudhry in his historic book mentioned it. In his book Qudrat ullah Shahab also criticized Ayub regarding that move. Ayub finally did a compromise at that stage. So in the first amendment, Islamic Republic was included. But Naqi sahib, did not mentioned it obviously. Naqi sahib’s figures regarding 1946 assemblies are not correct. Likewise, there were many Punjabi Muslims in left politics before 1947 yet naqi sahib did not mention it too. In fact, CPI was not a united party even before partition but Naqi sahib missed it too. Interestingly Naqi sahib talked about resistance against Ayub & Zia but did not mention resistance against General Yahya and Musharaf due to different reasons. After October 12, 1999 some civil society actors were with NRB while some actors were busy with a sitting minister of Mushraf. Anyway, I will add some more omissions, errors in it too but meanwhile you enjoy reading the interview yourself first. Thanks
