Done my masters’ degree in French
language and literature from the University of Punjab and completed one year of
postgraduate study in Sociology at AlamaIqbal University also studied one-year
course on Social Enterprise Management from LUMS. Presently working as
executive director of a women organization WISE (Women in Struggle for
Empowerment).
For last one and half decade, I have
been extensively engaged with working-class movements in general, and with
women working in the informal sector in particular. These include home-based
workers, peasant workers, factory workers, landless women and young girls. I
have a vast experience for organizing women at the grassroots level, including
highlighting women workers’ issues in the media, designing campaigns, as well
as educational and training programs, organizing rallies and press conferences
and maintaining liaison with local and other movements at regional and internationally.
I have 16 years work experience as a
women’s rights leader, a manager and a technical expert on gender, Human Rights
and democracy. I am recognized as one of the prominent social leaders in
Pakistan, mostly focused on women’s empowerment and Human Rights. I have
extensively worked on issues of violence against women, political participation
of women, right to mobility, discrimination against women, issues related to
slavery and Child labor, highlighting consequences of militancy in our culture
and women’s empowerment. I have developed leadership skills among young girls
with a heavy focus on gender issues and democratic norms.
I have conducted gender sensitivity
trainings related to democracy, diversity and peace for a wide range of
audiences in different civil society organizations, lawyer, journalists, trade
unions, minority communities and government departments across country.
I was part of the team which lobbyist
for anti-sexual harassment legislation that was fully supported by the Parliament
and signed into law by the President of Pakistan in March 2010. I am member of provincial Implementation
Watch Committee on Sexual Harassment in Punjab.
I have extensive experience in the
fields of human rights and development, with focus on women, children, labor
rights, the issue of Torture, program development and management. This mainly
includes hands on experience in conceptualizing, designing and running human
rights programs and campaigns. I developed partnerships with public, private
and non-profit organizations on various themes like effective
implementation of women related laws and UN conventions includes UDHR, CRC,
CEDAW and UNCAT.
I also enjoy sufficient experience in
designing of Issue-based campaigns, project management, strategic planning,
organizational development, training, team building etc. I conducted multiple
assessments, policy and institutional reviews, monitoring missions and managed
wide range of projects. Being a trained trainer, I conducted/facilitated
numerous training courses and workshops in multiple domains like community
mobilization, accountability and effective governance, participatory planning
and management and sexual harassment.
I have also written on various topics
related to women and human rights issues. These have appeared in various
magazines, journals and websites.
I have a great exposure of meeting
women and human rights groups and travelled in 25 countries of the world.
I am also the mother of two teen-age
sons.

Mr. Samson Salamat is
the Director of the Lahore, Pakistan-based Centre for Human
Rights
Education-Pakistan (CHRE), a nonprofit, non-governmental and non-political
organization run by
human rights educators and human rights defenders to strengthen
human rights through
educational programs, advocacy and awareness raising initiatives.
Established in 2010
CHRE supports human rights education, training of human rights
defenders, civil
society groups, government institutions, the development of educational
materials and advocacy
initiatives to advance the protection and promotion of human
rights.
Before the
establishment of the Centre for Human Rights Education-Pakistan, Mr.
Samson Salamat worked
as Manager of Programs for the National (Catholic)
Commission for Justice
and Peace’s “Democracy and Human Rights Education Program
(2000-2008)”which
promoted civil and political rights, especially for religious minorities
in Pakistan such as Christians,
Hindus, and Ahmadis, who are discriminated against and
persecuted because of
their faith.
Mr. Samson Salamat has
also worked as Program Manager for the Mukhtar Mai
Women’s Welfare
Organization (2008- 2010) which focused on raising voices against all
forms of violence and
discrimination against women and girls. During this period Mr.
Samson Salamat helped
the organization to develop systems and mechanisms for its
sustainability and
institutionalization with the support of the US State Department’s
Bureau of Democracy,
Labor and Human Rights, the National Endowment for
Democracy, and the
International Rescue Committee.
Mr. Samson Salamat
earned a Masters in Political Science from Islamic University
Bahawalpur and
participated in domestic and international courses on human rights,
including the
International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP) in Montreal
organized by Equitas
(International Centre for Human Rights Education) and a course
on minority rights by
the Working Group on Minorities at the United Nations.
Mr. Samson Salamat has
conducted advocacy inside and outside Pakistan on Pakistan’s
human rights issues,
especially within the UN Human Rights System, including at the
Human Rights Council,
Working Group on Minorities, and with the UN Special
Rapporteurs on Freedom
of Religion and Belief and Situation of Human Rights
Defenders.
Mr. Samson Salamat has
worked with Pakistan’s political parties, government and state
institutions including
the Elections Commission of Pakistan and Ministry of Minorities to
advocate for reforms in
the electoral process and to address human rights abuses.
Mr. Samson Salamat is
also member of the Anti-Torture Alliance, Mumkin Alliance (an
alliance on violence
against women), founder of the Peace and Tolerance Alliance (an
alliance against
religious extremism and religious intolerance), Aman Ittehad (Peace
Coalition), Joint
Action Committee for Peoples Rights, and also serves as a consultant
for NGOs on
organizational development.
At the Centre for Human
Rights Education, Mr. Samson Salamat has led a team of
young human rights
activists to train the next generation of human rights defenders in
Pakistan. CHRE helps
strengthen activists’ understanding of human rights, democracy,
peace and tolerance
through practical learning and an emphasis on institutional
approaches to all aspects of human rights
advocacy..
