Review of Farahnaz Isphani book: Religious minorities & enigma of the counter narrative in Pakistan

Review of Farahnaz Isphani book

'' Purifying the land of the pure''
Religious minorities & Enigma of the counter narrative

She rightly criticizes Ziaul Haq and Taliban but does not mention the effects of fundamentalist rule in Iran after 1979 and US/Western support of Islamists during the Afghan war

In 21st century if we are not ready to deconstruct bad policies of 19th and 20th centuries and remain happy to accuse East or West, Muslims or Hindus or Christians then we don't need enemies. Our media especially anchors as well as intellectuals are part of problem in this regard and their narratives usually either support a thesis or anti thesis. It is hard for them to explore gray areas and that is why they fail to find synthesis still in the 2nd decade of 21st century.
The review Published in the News On Sunday

instead of counter narrative it becomes an anti-thesis and after reading it we have to find synthesis.

Narratives imposed or coined during last two centuries were largely products of those times where King-ships were breaking and Nation State phenomenon was knocking at our door steps. European colonial masters entered at our lands in that transitional period.  British colonialists succeed and till 1947 they ruled in British India. They succeeded in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma, Afghanistan too but they made those areas separate nation States. Till 1935 Burma and Adan were in British India yet in the act of 1935 they separated both areas from British India.   They not only played with the geography but also played with religions, languages extensively. In order to justify their presence they coined some Narratives and interestingly many of us still are victim of those narratives. numerous groups oppose colonialists yet few were able to challenge those narratives.

some more facts

  • Lhore Darbar government ruled for 50 years in a Muslim majority area. Ranjit had numerous Muslim Punjabis; Pathans & Kashmiris in his court
  •  colonial masters not only used “Political Islam” against Lhore Darbar but also commissioned a propaganda campaign based on anti-Muslim, anti-Pathan malice. We inherited that malice in Pakistan and it suits Islamists in many ways.
  • She wrote in favor of secular traditions of Bengalis but she should read a book “An Inquiry into causes and consequences of deprivation of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh through the vested property act” edited by Abul Barakat of Dhakka (published in 2000). The infamous act was coined in post 1965 scenario in India and Pakistan yet Sh Mujib with a mischievous amendment imposed it and since 1972; five million Hindus had left Bangladesh
  •  After reading this book, a youngster may think that there was not any resistance against orthodox policies and totalitarianism in Pakistan and here the author entangled in her own narrative. So instead of counter narrative it becomes an anti-thesis and after reading it we have to find synthesis. Without reading this book you cannot bargain for synthesis.
