Specter of Privatization is Haunting Pakistan!

Specter of Privatization is Haunting Pakistan!

RIDDLES & SOLUTIONS
THINK BEFORE SPEAK

Debate of privatization, nationalization and Public Private Partnership is not new in the Pakistan. The resignation of the first minister in Pakistan is a witness of this debate just after two months of its birth. He was the same man who raised the slogan of Islamic Socialism, first time in Pakistan. His proposal was rejected by those who had an eye on precious lands, buildings, shops, factories of Hindus and Sikhs vacated in the aftermath of unprecedented transfer of population on the bais of religion across the borders in Subcontinent.. Rise of 22 families in late 1960s proved his apprehensions correct yet he was no more in this world. He was none the other but Mian Iftiqar ud din of Lhore. I will write about him in detail later but here you think about the debate.  Formation of PPP was a reaction against those 22 families and it was the Punjab who stood with PPP at that crucial period of time.
One must analysis nationalization of ZA Bhutto in the back ground of reaction against 22 families as well as post 16-December 1971 Pakistan. It was, largely a political decision rather then economic. It was Zia ul Haq who initiated unannounced denationalization and privatization. Here started privatization process without regulation and in so many ways it was in the interests of some powerful groups and institutions. We witnessed fall of public institutions and rise of military complex simultaneously. Explore the politics behind selective privatization which will help us in understanding the post 1980s politics in Pakistan well. we have to understand the phenomenon with that background. read the piece published in weekly Humshehri
